Mayer-Brown - In The News - 2007Pro Bono Client Featured in The Washington Post 20 July 2007 Mayer, Brown, Row & Maw pro bono client Nadar Por Vida, and its founder Arthur Lopez, were featured on the front page of The Washington Post's Metro Section (March 18, 2007). Through Nadar Por Vida (Swimming for Life), Mr. Lopez provides economically disadvantaged youths with a program that mixes swim skills with life skills. Mr. Lopez delivers a message to the Nadar participants at every swimming lesson, always reinforcing a "universal theme": the importance of education. "`Coach thinks this is a privilege,' says Oscar Reyes, a burly eighth grader and once a regular class jester. Until Nadar, he frequented the principal's office. Now he frequents his books. 'If I don't keep my grades in place, I won't be able to swim.'" As The Washington Post reported, "[n]early 200 [kids] have been part of Nadar since fall 2004, learning breaststroke, to be sure, but also perspective and discipline that will carry them far beyond the pool." Washington D.C. partner John Hahn brought Nadar Por Vida to the firm, and Washington counsel Linda Rhodes and Chicago partner Rich Assmus have provided Nadar Por Vida with tax, incorporation, and intellectual property assistance. Mayer Brown continues to provide the organization with pro bono legal services. |
