Why Swim? There is no more supporting or welcoming community in America for at-risk families than the Northern Virginia swim community! Nationally, high school and college swimmers have the highest grade point averages. They are the best overall students and perfect role models.
Studies show that Latino and African American children drown at a rate 3 times higher than white children. If neither parent can swim, the rate is 9 times higher. In fact, almost 6 out of 10 Latino children cannot swim! How many Latino and minority Olympians have you seen? How many high school swimmers? not too many... Additionally, today, 23 million children and teenagers are overweight or obese. That is more than 1 in every 3 young people! Latinos are younger and poorer than any other population group, so we make up a good portion of this group. Nadar Por Vida stresses the importance of a healthy body by learning to swim as a life skill. You don't have to be on a team to swim. Swimming is a skill you keep for life. So, let's break these cycles of drowning and childhood obesity and learn to swim!
